Sourav Ganguly’s daughter Sana kidnap

A threat to kidnap Sourav Ganguly’s daughter Sana during poojas has sent the state police in to tizzy.Sourav, on Tuesday revealed in Bangalore the threat to his daughter’s safety after announcing his decision to retire from international cricket at the end of the upcoming series against Australia.

“It’s true, but it would be better if we don’t discuss it here,” Sourav told media persons on being asked about the threats. The state CID has taken up investigation while the South 24-Parganas police have increased security for Kolkata’s most famous cricketer and his family. A handwritten letter — demanding ransom — came around 10 days ago. The letter was written in Bengali and mentioned the word ‘kidnap’. Police sources said no phone calls have come to the family demanding any ransom. While Sourav was away for national duty (he appeared for the

India A side), his wife Dona remained in Kolkata. She curtailed some of her Puja engagements to be with Sana.

State home secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti said the state government had taken steps immediately after receiving intimation. “Security for Sourav’s daughter has been beefed up and ditto for his house. Investigation is on to find out who had sent the letters and how serious the threat is,” Chakrabarti said.

ADG CID Bhupinder Singh confirmed that the former Indian cricket captain had received letters threatening that his daughter will be abducted. DIG CID (operations) S N Gupta said a probe has been started in the case.

CID sources said the letter came by speed post and was sent to the dance school run by Sourav’s wife Dona Ganguly at a Behala locality. The speed post was booked from a post office at Esplanade.

The family informed Thakurpukur police station and then the state CID took up the investigation. CID officers said they have already spoken to the postmaster and the booking clerk who took the envelope for Speed Post at the post office.

“It seems the sender’s name and address is fake. We are looking for clues to trace the sender,” a CID officer said. CID officers added that the family had received another letter making the same threat about a month back. That letter was dropped in the post-box of Sourav’s in-laws’ residence next door.

Police sources said none of the security guards at the Ganguly household remembers seeing anybody walking up to the neighbouring house and dropping the letter. Anybody could have walked up and dropped the letter. Since there is tight security at Sourav’s house, the in-laws’ house was selected,” an officer said.

RAJASTHAN BOARD APPLICATION /PROFORMA 2008-09

Fact 1 : In 1961, the first census after the state’s formation in 1956, revealed that literacy rate in Rajasthan stood at 18%, the lowest in the country. The female literacy rate was abysmally low at 7%.

Fact 2 : The latest 2001 census shows that during the last decade Rajasthan has recorded the highest percentage rise in literacy rate in the country. Female literacy was 43.85%.

Secondary Examination- 2008 Result

According to the Economic Review (2007-08) of the state government, Rajasthan has recorded a literacy rate of 60.4%, compared with 38.6% in 1991, registering a net rise of 21.8% during the decade. The figures for male and female literacy rates are 75.7% and 43.9%, respectively. The review says, the literacy rates in the state, when compared with the national aggregate, has reduced from being 14 percent points in 1991 to a mere four percent points in 2001.

The review explains the reason for the success as a result of a two-fold measure adopted by the state. Besides the suitable implementation of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in the state, the rise in the literacy rate has been grossly due to initiatives taken by the state government in the education sector.

“It is an umbrella under which innovative multi-stakeholder partnerships are catalysed by enlarging the global and local private, foundations and other grassroot level NGOs in support of Rajasthan’s education objectives. The main focus of the initiative is on improving the delivery of educational services, promoting equitable access, enrolment and retention of children in school, reducing gender disparities, promoting skill development,” the review says.

And the measures have indeed paid rich dividends. According to the additional chief secretary, social infrastructure, Rajasthan, Parmesh Chandra, “As far as enrolment of students or bringing down the drop out rate is concerned, we have nearly achieved the targets in elementary schools. SSA has gained momentum and we are doing much better than many other states in the country.”

“Though the actual figure for enrolment of students between the age group of 6 to 14 years read at 97%, it can safely be put at 90%. The rest consists of those children who are nomadic or other extreme cases and would under no circumstances attend school. So, in a way, we have done the maximum that could be achieved under this programme,” Chandra adds.

In fact after the troubled ’60s the education graph of Rajasthan began to rise thanks to some public initiatives taken like the Lok Jumbish and the Shiksha Karmi. However, the early ’90s saw large-scale drop outs and absenteeism of teachers that jolted the education scenario.
But with time that was tackled by the state. In fact the state has reached such a stage now that at a time when the Centre is trying to work out the modalities for making elementary education a Fundamental Right for children between the age group of 6-14 years in the country, the state government is busy to ensure Secondary education for children.

In a unique bid, the state plans to open about 3,108 secondary level schools in the state in 2008-09. By next year, more such schools will be opened so that there is at least one secondary school in each village panchayat. It is expected that after the completion of this scheme by 2010, no student would have to travel more than 3 kms to complete their ninth and 10th grade. The estimated budget for the project stands at between Rs 300-400 crore per year. “Not only infrastructure wise, but we would also have to recruit teachers and pay them. The cost will, therefore, have to take all these factors into account,” he added.

The state has also planned to enhance the Rajasthan Board syllabus in these schools to match the CBSE pattern so as to give a better edge to students in competitive examinations.
Even in the SSA, the state education department has decided to effect some improvements for ensuring quality education.

The state has already begun extensive training of teachers as a first step in this direction. About 25,000-30,000 teachers are being given training per year in new techniques, besides lessons in the subjects that they teach. Souce : Times of India.

On Friday morning we spotted a standee of the film being rolled out at a multiplex. And just one look of the poster is enough to get you curious about Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Firstly it is not set in the Swiss Alps or Manhattan. And the leading lady – whose face is hidden by the way, is dressed in a simple salwar, not in a chiffon sari. But the real surprise is Shah Rukh Khan who is not on a Harley Davidson sporting designer glasses and jackets

If Chak De! India was simple, here he is wearing formal grey trousers, an over-sized white shirt and unbranded sports shoes. Behind him is a scooter parked in what looks like a street in a north Indian suburb.

But with reports of a lavish song featuring the top five actresses with Shah Rukh being shot, one is sure the film will have enough doses of glamour to balance the simplicity. Both of Aditya Chopra's films had their taglines featuring very prominently on the posters. So, if DDLJ was 'Come fall in love' and Mohabbatein was 'Some love stories live forever' this time it is 'There is an extraordinary love story in every jodi'. The film opens worldwide on DecEMBER 12, 2008.

The car, priced at Rs.2.02 million (Rs.20.2 lakh) and which the company showcased at the Auto Expo 2008, has already sold 300,000 units in North America, Japan, Australia and the European markets.

Friday's launch in the Indian capital marks its debut in the country.

The four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle is powered by a 2.4-litre 16-valve petrol engine giving the car a maximum power of 170 ps/6,000 rpm.

'The Outlander is based on a new platform and its 2.4-litre engine has a capability to get 7 percent extra acceleration and 10 percent extra fuel efficiency as compared to conventional engines,' Tetsuro Aikawa, managing director (products, strategy and development) of Mitsubishi Group, said.

'The car is very fuel-efficient as compared to other SUVs and has a capability of 10.3 kilometres per litre under test conditions,' said Hindustan Motors chairman C.K. Birla.

'We launched Outlander in India in keeping with the policy of offering the latest from the Mitsubishi stable to the Indian consumers,' he added. 'This vehicle has all that needs to be a winner and will strengthen the Mitsubishi brand as the leader amongst premium SUVs.'

The crossover SUV has a six-speed transmission powered by paddle shift on steering wheel.

Drona is the new film where Abhishek Bacchan and Priyanka Chopra have played their respective roles successfully. Abhishek Bacchan played the role of Aditya in the film who used to get nightmares from childhood. Whenever he used to wake up from sleep there used to be a magical blue rose petal which used to present itself before him. An evil sorcerer, Riz Raizada in another town wanted to get hold of the secret which Drona had. It was not possible to get the secret without conquering Drona. One day Riz met Drona and recognized him. Sonia, the leader of the cult made Drona realize his identity. She took him to his place of birth that was the ancient city of Pratapgarh. Her main intention was to remind him about his background where his mother Jayati Debi lived. She could answer all the questions which Drona never remembered but required to know as there were lot of stories relating to his past life and they were material in his present life. But Riz Raizada caught hold of him and the confrontation with the evil powers started. The remedies which Drona used to see in his dreams helped him to face the odds and win over the challenging circumstances. The story was based on fantasy, but Abhishek Bacchan and Priyanka Chopra were brilliant in their respective roles. The action sequences were also innovative. Priyanka Chopra had many releases this year and most of them were successful. Jaya Bacchan was impressive in the role of the mother Jayati Devi. KK Menon did well in the film. Ashu Druv had given the music and it was impressive. The only concern is that none of the films relating to fantasy could succeed this year. Kidnap is a high level drama which unveils the story with each opening scene, step by step. It is basically the story of the fight between Imran Khan (an orphan), who wants to take revenge from Sanjay Dutt (an affluent New York-based Indian businessman, who does not see beyond money). Though a kind hearted father and a loving husband, he is too proud and unable to disclose his love to his wife Vidya Malvade. Minissha Lamba is the daughter of Sanjay and Vidya.

Vidya opts for a divorce on the pretext that Sanjay does not care for their well-being and is a shrewd businessman who only loves to count money by every second increase in it. Vidya is a strict mother and she does not like or want her daughter Minissha to continue any kind of relationship with her father. Vidya has been portrayed as a strict but care taking and loving mother who believes in restricting her daughter's movements. Despite her attempt to make her understand the dangers of being out of the house during late hours at night, Minissha refuses to budge and in a fit of rage she goes out one evening.

The film depicts how the family members are torn apart by turbulent misunderstanding. Minissha leaves the house and takes a plunge in the river to cool her anger but to her dismay she is kidnapped by Imran.Imran wants this rich and stubborn businessman Sanjay realise how important the word 'sorry' is in his life that he wanted to tell him at the age of 14 but was not allowed at that point of time because of which his life gets topsy-turvy.Innocent and poor people are always unheard. It is only the verdict of the rich that reigns higher. Sanjay misinterprets the actions of the 14-year-old boy and is adamant in getting him behind the bars – that's the backdrop of the revenge drama.The direction of Sanjay Gadhvi keeps you zapped with head scratching inquisitiveness. Having cast prolific actors in the movie, Gadhvi definitely expected a good job out of them. And one has to confess, the contemporary cinema-goer will positively like their performances. Imran Khan especially who has not disappointed in this new avatar in his very second film.
Sanjay Dutt's macho man entry in his very first scene is not only breathtaking but his soft heartedness towards his daughter and accepting the tasks rendered to him by the kidnapper (Imran) undoubtedly identifies with him in real life. Needless to say that he is brilliant as always. Minissha Lamba fails to ignite any fire despite her skimpily clad attire. Vidya looks too young as Minissha's mother, but her modern dresses are quite refreshing so is her performance.All in all, Kidnap solely survives on the high risks manoeuvres of the kidnapper. The film's commercial value is kept intact. Music score is seemingly mediocre, nothing special there. The dialogues are simple, and the incidents are more like a plethora of tales with ample amount of teachings. Cinematography is superb but the editing left a lot to be desired. Probably the length of the film remains a matter to be debated. Also, the film seems to be dragging a bit in the first half. Nevertheless, it is worth a one-time watch.
